Now that more and more people are installing solar panels on their roofs to generate their own green energy, the demand for energy storage is also growing. When the sun is shining brightly, you’ll likely have enough energy—and maybe even a surplus. But on days when there’s less sunlight, you’d naturally still want to use the energy you’ve generated. Storing Renewable Energy at Home

When we talk about storing renewable energy, the term “home battery” often comes up. This special battery makes it possible to store energy in your home. Electricity that isn’t immediately used by your appliances is sent directly to the battery by a controller. If you aren’t generating electricity at a later time but do need it, the controller will draw the electricity from your home battery.

Is a home battery cost-effective?

At the moment, home batteries are still quite expensive to purchase. In addition, current batteries have another major drawback: they can only store energy for a limited number of days. You cannot save the energy you generate and have left over during the sunny summer months for use during the winter months. The system is not yet capable of that. However, developments are moving quickly, leading to increasing research into how this can be achieved.
At present, home batteries are not cost-effective due to their purchase price and the limited duration for which energy can be stored. However, the greater the demand for home batteries, the greater the supply will become, and the lower the prices will ultimately be. Storing renewable energy with a home battery could therefore certainly become more attractive in the future.

What is the alternative?

So, while it is possible to store renewable energy, it isn’t yet a viable option. A better alternative is to use renewable energy as efficiently as possible. Of course, your solar panels generate the most power during the day, so it makes sense to use the appliances you need during those hours.
