Subsidy for Electric Cars

As a private individual in the Netherlands, you may be eligible for the Electric Passenger Car Subsidy for Private Individuals (SEPP) when purchasing a fully electric passenger car or a private lease car. What does this electric car subsidy entail? And what requirements must I meet? We’re happy to answer those questions in this article.
The electric car subsidy applies to new and used electric passenger cars in the smaller or compact mid-size class. This program is in effect in the Netherlands, and you can apply for it once, provided you meet the requirements. In Belgium, there was a zero-emission bonus until 2020 that encouraged the purchase of electric cars. This bonus has since been abolished.

Eligibility Requirements for the Electric Vehicle Grant

The website of the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) lists therequirements you must meet to be eligible for the electric car subsidy. For example, the passenger car you purchase must be 100% electric with a range of at least 120 kilometers. The list price must be no less than €12,000 and no more than €45,000. Furthermore, the vehicle cannot be a converted car and must have been manufactured as an electric vehicle.

Apply for a Grant

Electric driving is becoming increasingly popular. It’s no surprise, then, that many people are applying for the electric car subsidy. As a result, the available budget is running out quickly. There is already no budget left for 2021. You can apply for the subsidy again starting in January 2022.
The good news is that three times as much funding will be available in 2022, creating opportunities to apply for the electric car subsidy. However, due to falling purchase prices for electric cars, the subsidy amount has been reduced to €3,350 instead of the originally planned €3,700. The subsidy for used cars remains at €2,000.
Please note that the purchase or lease agreement for the car must be signed in the same calendar year in which you apply for the subsidy. If this is not the case, you will not be eligible for the SEPP. To apply for an electric car subsidy in 2022, you must therefore have signed a purchase or lease agreement on or after January 1, 2022. The date on which you enter into the purchase or lease agreement is decisive. The electric passenger car must also not have been registered in your name before January 1, 2022.
