Insuring a Charging Station

If you’ve had a charging station installed at your home, you naturally don’t want anything to happen to it. It’s a good idea to review your insurance policy and see what is and isn’t covered. Is it necessary to insure a charging station? We’d be happy to tell you more about it.

What should I keep in mind when insuring a charging station?

First of all, it’s good to know whether damage to your charging station is already covered by one of your existing insurance policies. To find out, review your policy or contact your insurer. It’s also helpful to know the amount of coverage and whether it’s sufficient. If necessary, you can increase your coverage. Whether or not your charging station is insured depends in part on the type of home you live in. We’ll explain this in more detail below.
Insuring a Charging Station

Insuring a charging station for a home you own

Do you own a home? If so, your mortgage lender often requires you to purchase home insurance. This insurance covers damage to all items that are permanently attached to your home and the land on which it stands. That means a permanently installed charging station is also covered as standard. It is, however, a good idea to let your insurer know that you’ve had a new charging station installed. You can also check your policy to see if your coverage is sufficient.

Charging station at an apartment building

Do you live in a condominium and have you had a charging station installed on the premises? In that case, it’s often not necessary to insure your charging station separately. It’s often covered under your household contents insurance with “owner’s interest” coverage. For condominiums, the Homeowners’ Association often arranges building insurance. For additional items you have installed, the coverage may not be high enough. With “owner’s interest” coverage, you have supplemental coverage under your home contents insurance. You can check with your insurer to find out how much this coverage is. It’s a good idea to let your insurer know that you’ve had a charging station installed.

Charging station at a rental property

Ifyou rent your home, you can insure the chargingstation under your household contents insurance as a tenant’s interest. Check with your insurer to see what coverage is available for this.
