Every year, about 300 million metric tons of plastic end up in landfills. However, not all waste ends up properly in the trash can. Litter not only pollutes our oceans and cities, but also causes a great deal of animal suffering.
Our mission is to ensure a better future for future generations. Although our focus at myenergi is on green energy products, we are also extremely passionate about all aspects of sustainability. That’s why we’d like to share more about the impact of litter.
Waste Statistics
- The World Wide Fund for Nature reports that 1.5 million metric tons of plastic litter consists of water bottles.
- 33% of the waste comes from fast food.
- Every year, one billion seabirds die from marine debris, and about 260 marine animals become entangled in debris in the ocean.
Impact of Litter on Wildlife
Trash that is thoughtlessly thrown on the ground has a negative impact on plants and animals. It poses a threat not only to their health but also to their habitat. Here are just a few examples:
- Animals get tangled in pieces of plastic
- An animal can suffocate in plastic bags and similar materials
- Some creatures cut themselves on sharp pieces of litter that people throw away
- Litter damages and pollutes the nests and habitats that animals have spent so much time building
These are just a few examples of the impact of litter on animals. You may already be noticing a pattern here: All of these consequences can be prevented.
How can we stop this?
The answer is simple: Stop littering. Dispose of trash properly and don’t just let it end up in nature. Use recyclable materials whenever possible and dispose of them in the appropriate recycling bins. Also, avoid using plastic straws and cutlery.
Do you still have plastic you want to throw away? If so, take the following precautions:
- Cut off the elastic bands and rings from plastic packaging so that animals cannot get trapped
- Rinse out cans and flatten them before throwing them away
- Pick up other people's trash and throw it in the trash can
- Put the lid back on the package before throwing it away
- Use paper bags or bring your own bag when you go shopping
