While browsing our products, you’ve probably already seen our smart home EV charger, zappi. But what exactly is an EV charger? And what makes zappi so unique? We’d love to tell you more about it.

How can I charge my electric car?

To charge your electric car, you’ll need a charging cable. In the Netherlands, electric cars use a Type 2 plug, also known as a Mennekes plug. If you want to charge your car at home, you’ll need your own charging station or wall charger. Planning to charge your car while on the road? In that case, you’ll often need a charging card or app to use public charging stations. The charging time depends on the size of your battery in kW and the charging rate in kWh. Generally speaking, you can charge faster at a commercial charging station than at home.

What is a home EV charger?

EV stands for Electric Vehicle. An electric car is an example of an EV. A home EV charger is therefore simply a charger that allows you to charge your electric car at home.
In theory, you can plug most electric cars into a standard outlet, but this is not recommended. The charging cable could overheat and cause a fire. Of course, you don’t want that to happen. For safer charging, it’s wiser to choose a special EV charger for home use.

Why should I charge at home?

Of course, you can charge your electric car at a nearby commercial charging station, but charging at home is often much cheaper. That’s because you pay the “regular” electricity rate. Charging at public charging stations and poles can vary greatly in price. On average, it quickly adds up to €0.41 per kWh. At a fast charger, it’s even €0.60 per kWh. With a home EV charger, you’ll naturally have to cover the cost of your own charging station or wall charger.
Another advantage of charging at home is that your car is ready to go. It takes very little effort to charge the car, and you don’t have to go looking for a charging station.

Is a home EV charger safe?

When you purchase your home EV charger and have it installed by a certified installer, you can safely use it to charge your car. Thanks to the strict European regulations that chargers must meet, you can use it safely.
