What is a carbon footprint?
A quick Google search will tell you that a carbon footprint is defined as “the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere as a result of the activities of an individual, organization, or community.” But what does that have to do with saving the planet?
Carbon dioxide accounts for 85% of all emissions and has a major impact on global warming. Increased CO2 emissions have a negative effect on climate change, greenhouse gases, and our health.
How do I calculate my carbon footprint?
Every choice you make at home—whether it’s about transportation, clothing, or food—has an impact on your carbon footprint. Milieu Centraal has developed a calculation tool that lets you figure out exactly how much CO2 you emit as an individual. Calculate it yourself.
How can I reduce my carbon footprint?
Is your carbon footprint higher than average or higher than you'd like? With these 5 simple tips, you can reduce your personal impact on the climate.
- Insulate your home: By insulating your home, you’ll keep heat inside better in the winter and outside in the summer. That means you’ll be less likely to need the heater or air conditioner. Also, seal any gaps and cracks so heat can’t escape. Be sure to keep the space well-ventilated to ensure a healthy indoor environment.
- Use green energy: Energy from renewable sources emits almost no CO2.
- Make the most of your green energy: With our smart products, such as eddi, you can get the most out of the energy you generate yourself.
- Adjust your diet: Eat vegetarian or vegan meals more often. If you go just one week without eating meat, you’ll already save 13.7 kg of CO2eq. Meat and dairy account for 60% of CO2 emissions from agriculture and livestock farming. Furthermore, by not eating meat, you’re also helping to prevent animal suffering.
- Choose local products more often: By buying from your local farmer or local stores more often, you ensure that your products don't have to travel as far.
- Choose public transportation more often or walk: Can you walk or bike to work or to the stores? That will help you avoid unnecessary CO2 emissions. Do you have a longer distance to travel? Public transportation is more sustainable than driving your own car.
- Reduce your carbon footprint while driving: Switching to an electric car is the best way to reduce your carbon footprint. However, this may not be immediately feasible for everyone. You can still reduce your impact even with a gasoline or diesel car. Avoid driving unnecessarily fast or in the wrong gear. Also, try to avoid rush hour whenever possible so you don’t get stuck in traffic. Make sure your tires are properly inflated as well.
- Pair your electric car with zappi: By using our smart zappi charger, you can easily use your own green energy to charge your car and reduce your carbon footprint.
- Replace your halogen and incandescent bulbs with LED lighting: LED bulbs use up to 85% less energy. It’s an easy way to quickly save on your lighting costs. Also, don’t forget to turn off your lights when you’re not in a room. Even small steps can have a big impact on your carbon footprint.
- Recycle more: Try to avoid waste as much as possible. If you do have waste, please recycle it in the appropriate bin.
- Choose reusable and zero-waste solutions: Do you still often buy a plastic water bottle when you’re on the go? From now on, use a reusable bottle. There are more reusable alternatives than you might think—for example, for wrapping gifts.
