myenergi joins Openreach and The EV Café to share the story behind fleet home charging

Engineers supported by the programme now charge at home for at least 80% of their charging activity. We’re joining Openreach and The EV Café’s year-long partnership to share how home charging works for a fleet, and what other fleets can learn from it.

What is the partnership?

What does it take to put more than 7,500 electric vehicles to work across the UK? Over the next year, The EV Café and Openreach will take people behind the scenes of that journey and introduce the partners helping to make it happen.

Openreach operates a fleet of more than 23,000 vehicles. Its move to electric involves far more than choosing vans. Engineers need vehicles that suit their jobs, dependable ways to charge, equipment that works in the field and data that helps the fleet keep improving.

Allstar, Clayton Power, Geotab, MIS Conversions, Kelling Group, Holman, Stewart Signs and myenergi will each bring a different part of the story to life. We’re telling the fleet home charging part.

Why home charging matters for fleets

Fleet drivers often default to public charging out of habit or convenience, even when it costs more. Public charging can cost more than 60p per kWh, compared with roughly 8p at home on a smart tariff. For a workforce spread across the UK, that difference adds up quickly.

Charging at home also means drivers start the day with a vehicle that’s ready to go and spend less time looking for a charge point or waiting for one to be free.

What makes home charging work for a fleet

Installing a charger is the first step. What changes habits is:

  • making charging easy to use
  • making cheaper tariffs easy to access
  • making it simple for drivers to be reimbursed for charging a company vehicle at home

That’s what we’re focused on with zappi GLO, our smart EV charger. It delivers charging that follows cheaper electricity, typically overnight and off-peak, and works with smart tariffs.

The result is clear: engineers supported by the programme now charge at home for at least 80% of their charging activity. That means less reliance on public charging and less time spent finding and waiting for charge points.

Judy O’Keefe, Director of Fleet at Openreach

“Our partners are essential to the success of our fleet transition. We’ve made real progress, but we’re still learning and improving as we go.”

Ben Harris, Head of Energy and Mobility at myenergi

“Fleet operators need charging that keeps vehicles ready for work and costs under control. Public charging can cost more than 60p per kWh, compared with roughly 8p at home on a smart tariff. For a field-based workforce operating across the UK, that difference adds up quickly.”
