The Victorian ZEVET program
The Victorian Government is committed to driving Victoria’s zero-emission vehicle boom.
The Minister for Energy and Resources announced $2.2 million in funding across four projects under the ZEVET program, for innovative technologies in electric vehicle (EV) charging.
This program aims to help Victoria reach its target of 50% of all new light vehicle sales being zero emissions by 2030 and achieve net zero by 2045.
Learn more hereThe zappi ZEVET project installed 100 smart EV chargers in homes and businesses across Victoria. These chargers detect and utilise surplus electricity generated via rooftop solar to charge an electric vehicle. It can also work with the grid to alter charging in response to demand from the grid. This cutting-edge technology optimises the use of renewable energy in homes and businesses.
Key findings from the report:
Solar-Aware Charging Works
And home owners love it. We saw clear benefits when EV chargers were paired with rooftop solar. Many participants maximised self-consumption without lifting a finger, and got on with their day.
Timing is Everything
Shifting EV charging to daytime hours had a noticeable effect — not just on energy bills, but on the grid. The report explores how smart charging windows aligned with solar generation curves across Victoria.
Demand-Side Response Doesn’t Mean Disruption
We trialled demand-side response signals — and the vast majority of users didn’t even notice. The full report explains how this can support the grid without compromising EV readiness.
Behaviour is increasingly price-driven
From the decision to invest in home charging to when and how long users charge for is largely dictated by cost, rather than convenience.
