Some examples of biomass include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Crops<\/li>\n<li>Dung<\/li>\n<li>Wood chippings, which is, in fact, the most common form of biomass to be used.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is by no means a new form of energy production; it had been noted 2,000-3,000 years ago by explorer Marco Polo, that the\u00a0Chinese used covered sewage tanks to create biogas.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-12 flex center justify-center connector\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"col-12 connected-full-text-block\">\n<h4 class=\"h4  text-left  \">How does biomass create energy?<\/h4>\n<p>There are a number of ways in which Biomass can be used to create energy but the most common one is through\u00a0combustion. When organic matter is burned, steam is released, which drives a turbine to generate electricity and heat.<\/p>\n<p>Other methods include\u00a0Anaerobic Digestion plants\u00a0that break down biomass through the use of microorganisms in the absence of air within a tank.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-12 flex center justify-center connector\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"col-12 connected-full-text-block\">\n<h5 class=\"h4  text-left  \">What are the downsides of biomass?<\/h5>\n<p>Although biomass energy is renewable, the UK is currently importing millions of tonnes of wood pellets for biomass energy production.<\/p>\n<p>In 2018 alone,\u00a07.8 million tonnes of wood pellets were imported, 82% of which coming from Canada and the USA. Many biomass critics have labelled this unsustainable due to the use of emissions associated with transport and land use.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike many other\u00a0renewable energy sources, Biomass is\u00a0not greenhouse gas emission-free.<\/p>\n<p>Research commissioned by the UK government found that greenhouse gases generated from biomass can be lower or higher than those from fossil fuels per unit of electricity produced. This is due to varying factors such as the type of biomass and its origin.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-12 flex center justify-center connector\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"col-12 connected-full-text-block\">\n<h6 class=\"h4  text-left  \">The Future of Biomass<\/h6>\n<p>Don\u2019t worry, all is not negative! Modern technologies are being developed to capture emissions during combustion, contributing to the UK\u2019s long term emissions target that by\u00a02050 there will be net-zero greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-12 flex center justify-center connector\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"col-12 connected-full-text-block\">\n<h6 class=\"h4  text-left  \">Who is using biomass?<\/h6>\n<p>The UK\u2019s largest power station, Drax has been paving the way for a coal-free future with\u00a0two-thirds of its power units upgraded from coal to biomass.
