Don\u2019t you just plug in and charge?<\/h3>\n<p>Well, in theory, yes. Charging your EV at home or work is really simple \u2013 although you can charge from a standard (13A) socket \u2013 you ideally need to have a suitable charge point installed for topping up your battery.<\/p>\n<p>Currently charge points simply need to be \u2018internet connected\u2019 \u2013 which often means some nice visual tools in a mobile app &#8211; with some charge points also allowing you to set schedules so that you charge overnight when the electricity prices from some energy suppliers are lower.<\/p>\n                    <\/div>\n                <\/div>\n\n who enjoy spreading doom and gloom about EVs and the electricity supply.<\/p>\n<p>According to the National Grid who manage the electricity transmission network,\u00a0there\u2019s plenty of capacity to meet the future electricity demand \u2013 but not if everyone charges at the same time.\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s the what the new smart charge point regulations are aiming to solve.<\/p>\n buy batteries for your home (and of course an EV is just a big battery on wheels) it\u2019s very difficult and expensive to store the vast amounts of energy supplied through the electricity network.<\/p>\n<p>Instead the grid works by continuously balancing the amount of electricity generated by power stations, wind turbines and solar panels to match the total electricity demand at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>If the demand goes up then more generation needs to be turned on.\u00a0\u00a0National Grid also have the option to ask customers to reduce their load \u2013 something called a \u201cDemand Response Service\u201d.<\/p>\n                <\/div>\n            <\/div>\n\n        \n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id='block-simple-content-block_62821db2b3fda'  class='flexi-block charging is that if everyone starts to charge at the same time (ie. at the start of a low price electricity tariff) then the increase in demand will be too quick for the generators to respond\u2026\u00a0in the extreme case that could lead to power cuts.\u00a0This becomes even trickier as our grid decarbonises \u2013 more renewable electricity generated means we can\u2019t easily switch on more generators, and instead we need to be more intelligent with how we use power.<\/p>\n<p>No wonder the Government are paying attention!<\/p>\n\n            <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n first-mt-0 last-mb-0 \">\n                        <h5 class=\"h4  text-left  \">Optimum charging<\/h5>\n<p>New charge points will be set up so that the EV charges at the best time for the electricity network. The peak demand \u2013 or rush-hour periods on the grid \u2013 happen in the morning and late afternoon, so by default EVs will only charge overnight or during the middle of the day. myenergi zappi&#8217;s will be set to charge in off-peak hours by default (00:00\u201408:00). That\u2019s good for the grid and better for the environment (as generation tends to produce more CO<sub>2<\/sub> during the peak periods as we rely more on gas fired power stations at these times).<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re used to your EV charging as soon as you plug it in, or you\u2019re desperate for a charge, then you can override these settings, but the intention of the new smart charge point regulations is to encourage more EV charging at the off peak times.<\/p>\n                    <\/div>\n                <\/div>\n\n                    <\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n<div id='block-simple-content-block_62820c93b3fd9'  class='flexi-block simple-content-block pt-8 lg:pt-16 pb-8 lg:pb-16 '>\n\n    <div class=\"container mx-auto wide-container\">\n\n        <div class=\"content-inner bg-white rounded-2.5xl \">\n\n            <div class=\"mx-auto first-mt-0 last-mb-0 max-w-[90%] 2xl:max-w-[1410px]  \">\n\n                <p>From June 30th, every new <a href=\"https:\/\/myenergi.com\/zappi-ev-charger\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EV charger<\/a> that is sold will have to include a \u2018random delay\u2019 of up to 10 minutes every time an EV starts to charge.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ewa-rteLine\">\n<div class=\"ewa-rteLine\">\n<div class=\"ewa-rteLine\">So, even when you\u2019ve scheduled your charger to start powering-up your EV, your car won\u2019t start to charge straight away. That\u2019s going to be pretty unnerving for a lot of drivers who want the reassurance that their battery will be full when they next use their car.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"ewa-rteLine\">If you have your own generation, such as Solar or Wind, you might be thinking this will mean there could be a delay using your surplus? There&#8217;s no need to worry though, if you have your own generation, you can still charge from your excess energy and randomised delay will not apply.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>It\u2019s also going have an effect on anyone using a low price tariff; let\u2019s say that the tariff runs from 00:30 to 04:30am.\u00a0\u00a0Instead of starting to charge at 00:30, the EV might not start charging until 00:40 which means the customer has lost out on a few minutes of low rate electricity.\u00a0\u00a0Similarly, the charge may not stop until 04:40 \u2013 so that\u2019s 10 minutes of charging at the higher electricity tariff.<\/p>\n<p>This is not a huge cost on a single daily charge, and hopefully most EV drivers will consider this a small price to pay to keep the lights on, but it\u2019s important that we explain these new changes to avoid confusion. We&#8217;re sure there will be plenty of calls late this year to the myenergi Technical Support Team from new EV drivers when they can\u2019t understand why their car is not charging when they expect it to.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll be making sure that there\u2019s a message in the myenergi app when the random delay is active, to help provide some extra peace of mind.<\/p>\n<p>Demand Response Services using domestic loads are quite rare.\u00a0myenergi were part of the\u00a0\u201cFRED\u201d trial\u00a0which was one of the first to demonstrate how EV\u2019s could be used on large scale to balance the grid.<\/p>\n<p>The Government have recognised that with millions of EV\u2019s all plugged into the grid that we have huge battery that can be used to help balance the generation \u2013 but that won\u2019t work if there\u2019s a 10 minute delay every time National Grid need to call on that reserve.\u00a0Operators in the energy system, including distribution networks and energy suppliers also have the option to ask customers to change the time or rate of their charge \u2013 something called \u201cDemand Side Response Services\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That is why any EV charger that\u2019s providing Demand Side Response Services will be excluded from the 10-minute delay. Again, there\u2019s a lot to do to explain these new services to EV drivers so they are happy to sign up and pass (some) control of their charging to a third party.
